Unearthed Old Article - The Secret was the Worst Thing to Happen to The Science of Getting Rich - More Relevant Today

Through the Wayback Machine, I was able to unearth some of my old articles.  I always thought the Secret and LOA crowd got Wallace Wattles teaching wrong and wrote an old article about it.  With the proliferation of social media and LOA coaching, it is even more relevant today.  The article is updated for the latest edition of the book and is below.

One of the best books on acquiring wealth and the mindset needed to acquire wealth is the timeless Classic the Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles. The Science of Getting Rich book has had a tremendous impact on me and millions of others on their spiritual and financial journeys. One of the people who say it influenced them is of course Rhonda Byrne the author of the massive best selling book and DVD the Secret. In fact in the Secret and on a video on Youtube, she discusses the Science of Getting Rich as the book that changed her life.

The Secret as it is “revealed” in the book is the Law of Attraction. Which is defined in the book and others of its ilk as - That which is like unto itself, is drawn (Hicks) in other parts of the book it discusses the concept that what we think we attract, when it says Whatever is going on in your mind, you are attracting. This definition of course contradicts the first but is also difficult to believe. If everyone attracted or made come true what they think, people whom are hated would drop like flies, money would be plentiful in everyone’s lives and of course we would all be dating our dream girlfriends and boyfriends.

The LOA has three parts according to these teachers:

1. Ask- Know what you want and ask the universe for it.
2. Believe - Feel and behave as if the object of your desire is already here.
3. Receive - Be open to receiving it.

The author of the Secret goes on to say that, "The only reason why people do not have what they want is because they are thinking more about what they don't want than what they do want."

In other word, you don’t have to do anymore than this – no action is required on your part. Ask the universe for that new sports car, run around your house saying vroom vroom - as if you already have it and lastly be open to receiving it. So, when the universe pays for your Ferrari and drops it off at your house, make sure you are home and please don’t turn them away. Easy right?

What is You Point? Action!!!!!

What does this discussion have to do with the Science of Getting Rich? I think a lot, because the Science of Getting Rich is not a book about the Law of Attraction, in fact the word attraction does not appear in the book one time, however the word action appears 53 times. The Science of Getting Rich is a book about visualizing your goals, taking personal responsibility for making them happen by taking action, along with lessons in gratitude and fair dealing. In fact the most poignant chapters in the Science of Getting Rich are the ones about action. This quote from Chapter Eleven entitled Acting in the Certain Way summarizes the issues I have with the Secret.

THOUGHT is the creative power, or the impelling force which causes the creative power to act; thinking in a Certain Way will bring riches to you, but you must not rely upon thought alone, paying no attention to personal action. That is the rock upon which many otherwise scientific metaphysical thinkers meet shipwreck--the failure to connect thought with personal action.

In the Secret, there are few references to the action. One quote says, "action may be required." I disagree, action is always required . Again Wallace Wattles states –

Your pocketbook is not going to be transformed into a Fortunata's purse, which shall be always full of money without effort on your part.

Is anything more clear than this statement about the need for action?

These statements and this most important concept of personal action did not make an impact on the authors of the Secret, or they chose to ignore it as they may have felt that the public would not buy a book on action, but would connect with a mystical force funneling the things they think about in their direction. We will never know the true thoughts of the authors who now have become extremely rich selling the Secret to a willing public. My mission is to dispel the notion that the LOA and the Secret is a viable way to reach your goals as these people state and to get into people’s hands a method that works.
